While in Maldives travelers are subjected to the Maldivian Law and a grave violation may lead to hostile and undesirable penalties.
Alcohol is illegal outside resorts. Import of alcohol, firearms, drugs, and pornography to the country is strictly prohibited. Penalties are heavy for carrying or using illicit drugs.
It is also illegal to promote religions other than Islam. Importation of alcohol and non-Islamic religious materials may result in confiscation. Offenders may be subject to deportation or heavy fines.
Apart from the police and the military, there is council on every atoll and island who must keep an eye on what is happening, report to the central government and be responsible for the actions of local people.
Resorts are responsible for their guests and for what happens on their island. If a guest sunbathes or goes swimming in the nude, the resort can be fined, as well as the visitor.
Islamic practices and beliefs are adhered to in all parts of the country. It is advised for common sense and discretion to be exercised in dress code and behaviour to respect local culture and religion in order to avoid offending local sensitivities while visiting local islands other than resorts. Travelers are advised to dress conservatively and take care not to offend the locals especially in areas outside major cities.
